Renewing your Curaçao residence permit: when to start, which documents, and the mistakes that cost years
Renewing looks like a minor step next to getting your first permit, but it is where most people lose what they already had: the years of residence that count towards indefinite residence, or even the right to stay on the island. Almost always for the same reasons: starting late, filing an incomplete application, or not reporting a change in time.
The timeline
- From 4 months before expiry you can file the renewal. The last day is the expiry date.
- You wait for a renewal in Curaçao. Unlike a first application, you do not have to leave the island while they decide. The Toelatingsorganisatie has 4 months to respond.
- If it has already expired, there is a 3-month margin. The application is still treated as a renewal, but your residence seniority starts counting again from that late application. After those 3 months it counts as a first application, and as a rule a first application is awaited outside the country.
On top of that, letting those 3 months pass without filing is in itself a ground for ordering you to leave.
If your permit is for work, the clock starts earlier
Your residence permit rests on the work permit (tewerkstellingsvergunning, TWV) your employer obtains from the Ministry of Labour (SOAW), and that permit has its own deadlines:
- To renew it, the employer has to post the vacancy again with the Sentro pa Labor at least 5 weeks before applying. The vacancy notice is not only for the first time.
- SOAW does not publish a decision time for the TWV.
- To renew your residence permit you need a copy of the valid TWV or proof that it has been applied for and paid.
In practice: talk to your employer about 5 months before expiry, so the vacancy notice is already running when your 4-month window opens. And keep in mind that SOAW currently only processes TWVs of up to 6 months and of 6 to 12 months.
Documents for a work-based renewal
- Proof of payment of the fee (with your full name and date of birth as the reference).
- Original application form, completed and signed.
- Copy of your valid passport (of all your nationalities).
- Copy of your current residence permit.
- Your CRIB number.
- Copy of the valid TWV, or proof of its application and payment.
- Original employer's declaration, signed, with a copy of the employer's ID and an XCG 10 stamp.
- Original guarantee declaration signed by the employer, with an XCG 10 stamp.
- If the employer is a private person or a sole proprietorship: a statement from the Tax Inspectorate showing taxable income of at least XCG 36,000, from 2 years ago.
For other purposes the list changes, but two things repeat: a copy of the current permit and proof that you still meet the purpose (the bank statement for a rentier, enrollment and grades for a student). Each page has its own list: work, own business, family, rentier, pensioner and study.
What it costs
Renewing a work-based permit costs XCG 615 per year. Since 1 April 2026 you can request 1, 2 or 3 years, paying each year's fee up front (what changed that day, in Spanish). With a work-based permit, ask before paying for several years: your employer's TWV is currently granted for 12 months at most. Add the two XCG 10 stamps and, if you travel while you wait, the proof of return.
If you already had a 2, 3 or 5-year permit before that change and you renew on time, you keep that duration. If you renew late, you lose it.
The mistakes that cost the most
Filing on time, but incomplete
Since 1 April 2026, an application without at least the form, the passport copy and the proof of payment is not processed: there are no longer 6 weeks to complete it. And even with those, whatever is missing still counts. In a Bonaire case, a resident who filed his renewals on time but completed them after expiry built up gaps of 1 to 15 days, and the court ruled that those gaps do break the continuous residence required for indefinite residence (ECLI:NL:OGHACMB:2023:254).
Leaving it to the last moment
One setback (a document that takes long, a TWV that does not come through, an office closed over Christmas) is enough to miss the deadline. The only known case in which a court forgave a gap involved 23 days in 9 years of permits, caused by a medical emergency and the Christmas closure, and only because the person could document it (ECLI:NL:OGHACMB:2022:198). It is the exception, not the rule.
Not reporting a change
Any change that affects your permit (divorce, dismissal, a new employer, finishing your studies) must be reported within 6 weeks. A resident who did not report her divorce saw the court, years later, treat her permit as revoked from the date of the divorce, together with the years she had built up since (ECLI:NL:OGHACMB:2023:206).
Relying on what you are told verbally
An official telling you "don't worry, it will be sorted out" does not protect you if a deadline passes. Courts have said so more than once: without anything in writing, the remark does not count (ECLI:NL:OGHACMB:2011:BR5389).
If you need to travel while you wait
With the renewal pending and an expired sticker, simply leaving Curaçao can leave you unable to return as a resident. That is what the proof of return is for: it costs XCG 225, you apply in person with a photo and your ticket, and it is wise to allow up to a week.
The goal: no gaps
Under the admission policy, after 5 consecutive years working with a TWV and no lapses in validity, your permit is no longer tied to a specific employer. And after 10 years of uninterrupted legal residence you can apply for indefinite residence. That is why every complete, on-time renewal is worth more than it seems. For the other ways a permit can be lost, see how a residence permit is lost.
