📱 SIM card: buy it right at the airport
There are only two carriers: Digicel and Flow (locals call a prepaid SIM a "chippie" -- that's literally the real local nickname for a SIM card in Curaçao). Both have a counter at Hato Airport as soon as you land. A prepaid SIM costs around ANG/XCG 25 (~US$14). No need to look for a store in town -- sort it out the same day you land.
💵 Currency: use guilders (XCG), not dollars
Since March 31, 2025, the official currency is the Caribbean Guilder (XCG) -- the same XCG used for every cost on this site. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, but paying in USD is almost always more expensive because of the conversion margin businesses apply. Pull cash in XCG from an ATM (or pay by debit/credit, Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted) instead of paying directly in dollars.
💡 Water and power: Aqualectra
Aqualectra is the island's only water and electricity company -- its online billing portal is called MiKuenta (mikuenta.aqualectra.com). Before assuming you have to open your own account when renting: ask the landlord if the rent already includes the service under their name -- it's common, and saves you the new-connection paperwork.
💸 Sending or receiving money from your home country
Western Union and MoneyGram both operate in Curaçao. Before picking one, compare them: Western Union typically charges US$5-20 in fees (sometimes "fee-free" but with a worse exchange rate), MoneyGram US$4-10. The cheapest option is almost always a bank transfer or direct debit rather than a cash pickup -- check the exact exchange rate at the moment you send, don't assume it's the same as yesterday.
